The pitch is everywhere in Bangladesh right now: Germany, tuition-free, an EU degree for the price of a semester ticket. Most of it is true. What the pitch leaves out is that the money moves before you do, and that the single most common mistake we see is a student joining the wrong queue entirely — sitting in a VFS line for a visa VFS does not handle.
For a Germany student visa from Bangladesh in 2027, public university tuition is generally free, but you must first block roughly €11,904 in a blocked account, released to you at about €992 a month after arrival. Crucially, the German Embassy in Bangladesh takes student visa applications through its online system — not through the VFS counter that handles short-stay Schengen visas.
Why are so many Bangladeshi students searching for Germany in 2026?
Because the familiar doors narrowed at the same moment. Australia moved Bangladesh into its highest-risk evidence category in January 2026, Canada is running a reduced permit cap, and the UK restricted dependants and shortened the Graduate Route. Germany, meanwhile, still charges no tuition at most public universities. Our own demand checks show searches for Germany's student visa from Bangladesh rising sharply over the past year — faster than any other European destination we track apart from Italy and Malta.
That makes Germany worth understanding properly rather than joining late and badly. It is a demanding route, not an easy one.
Is public university tuition in Germany really free?
For most public universities, yes — including for international students, at bachelor's and master's level. What you pay instead is a semester contribution, commonly quoted at around €200–€300, which usually bundles administration and a local public transport ticket. Compared with UK tuition, the saving over a degree is measured in tens of lakhs of taka.
Two honest caveats. Free tuition means fierce competition, so grades matter more here than in fee-charging systems. And "free" applies to public universities — private institutions charge, sometimes heavily. Confirm the status of your specific university before you build a plan on the word free. These tuition figures are widely reported rather than taken from a single official source, so treat them as indicative.
What is the blocked account, and how much do you need for 2027?
Germany does not ask you to prove savings sitting in a Bangladeshi account. It asks you to move the money first. You open a blocked account (Sperrkonto), deposit a full year's living costs, and the bank releases roughly one twelfth back to you each month after you arrive.
The figure reported for 2026 is €992 per month, so €11,904 for the year, and sources report it continuing at that level into 2027. The amount is set by the Federal Foreign Office and tied to Germany's BAföG student support rate, and it is reviewed periodically — which is exactly why you should confirm the current number on the embassy's own pages before transferring anything. At today's rate €11,904 is roughly ৳16.9 lakh.
The blocked account is unusual in a helpful way: once it is funded, your living costs for the year are already secured and your parents are not wiring money every month. But the whole amount must exist and be transferable before the visa, through legal channels. A family that could pay in instalments across a year may still fail this test. Read our note on Bangladesh Bank's rules on releasing foreign exchange through a single authorised dealer branch before you plan the transfer.

Where do Bangladeshi students actually apply for a German student visa?
Through the embassy's online system, and this is the detail worth the whole article. The German Embassy's own appointment guidance for Bangladesh, updated on 1 February 2026, sets out a different channel for each category:
| Visa type | Where to apply | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Schengen, under 90 days | VFS Global | Embassy-stated |
| Student, incl. PhD | Online system | Embassy-stated |
| Research | Embassy appointment | Embassy-stated |
| Opportunity card, employment | Online system | Embassy-stated |
| Au pair, internship, language course | Waiting list | Embassy-stated |
So a student who books a VFS appointment has bought the wrong thing, and anyone charging a Bangladeshi family to "arrange the VFS appointment" for a student visa is charging for a step that does not apply. The embassy also states that special appointments cannot be granted and that such requests will not be answered — so there is no back door worth paying for either.
One more thing worth knowing about how Dhaka works: the German Embassy is the sole deciding authority not only for Germany but also when Hungary or Estonia is the main destination for a Schengen application.
Do you need to speak German?
It depends entirely on the level. Most bachelor's programmes at public universities are taught in German and expect a high level of proficiency, which is a serious barrier if you are starting from zero. At master's level there are many programmes taught fully in English, particularly in engineering, IT, data and business. Even then, basic German helps enormously with part-time work, housing and staying on after graduation. Programme-language patterns vary by university and are not from a single official source — check each programme page.
What happens if your application is refused?
You have two options, and the embassy is unusually candid about which is faster. You can file a remonstration — a formal appeal — but a decision on it can take 6 to 8 weeks, and while it is pending you cannot submit a fresh application. Alternatively you can simply apply again with complete, meaningful and verifiable documents, which the embassy notes may be quicker.
The practical lesson is the ordinary one: a refusal usually reflects a file that did not answer the question, and the cheapest fix is to have answered it properly the first time.
Before you commit to Germany
- Confirm your university is public and check its semester contribution.
- Verify the current blocked-account figure on the embassy's own pages.
- Plan the transfer route through one authorised dealer branch in Bangladesh.
- Check whether your programme is taught in English or German.
- Apply through the embassy's online system, not a VFS appointment.
- Be honest about your grades — free tuition means heavy competition.
What we would check before letting a student commit
Three things, in this order. Whether the family can genuinely move the full blocked amount through legal channels before a visa exists — not whether they own assets worth that much. Whether the academic record is competitive enough for a system where thousands apply because it costs nothing. And whether the student has a real plan for the language, because an English-taught master's still lands you in a German-speaking city where the housing market and the part-time jobs run in German.
Germany rewards the well-prepared and quietly filters out everyone else. That is not a reason to avoid it. It is a reason not to start it three weeks before a deadline.
Verify before you act. The application-channel table and the remonstration timing come from the German Embassy in Bangladesh's own published pages, read on 14 August 2026. The blocked-account amount, tuition and semester-contribution figures, and programme-language patterns are from secondary sources and are reported rather than confirmed for 2027. The Federal Foreign Office reviews the blocked amount periodically. Confirm the current figure and process on the embassy website before transferring money or booking anything.
