Russia Student Visa from Bangladesh 2027: Full Guide

In March this year, a Dhaka student named Suraiya Akter opened an email she had been waiting two and a half years for. She had applied to the UK, Hungary, Lithuania, Austria and Malaysia. She had sat IELTS. She had been rejected, ignored, and rejected again. The email that finally said yes came from Russia — a country she had not seriously considered when she started.

She is not unusual any more. If you are researching a Russia student visa from Bangladesh for 2027, you are joining a queue that has roughly tripled in size in two years. And the timing matters more than most students realise: the application dates for the 2027/2028 scholarship round are due to be published this month.

How do you get a Russia student visa from Bangladesh in 2027?

There is no single application form. Everything in the Russian system hangs off one document — the invitation (приглашение) — and which door you walk through decides who issues it to you.

That three-month clock is the single most common reason a Russia file falls apart, and almost no consultancy page in Bangladesh mentions it.

1
Register on the official portal. The Russian government's selection site is education-in-russia.com. Create an account and open a new application.
2
Choose a programme and up to six universities. The portal caps you at six. Choosing six Moscow names is how most Bangladeshi applicants waste their chances — spread across regions.
3
Upload your documents and sit the selection in Bangladesh. The competitive stage happens locally, run through the Russian House in Dhaka — not in Moscow.
4
Receive the invitation. Quota winners get a telex to the consulate; self-funded students get a letter from the university.
5
Lodge the visa file at the Embassy in Gulshan-2. Start roughly 45 days before your intended arrival; issuance itself typically runs 2–3 weeks.

What does the Russian government scholarship cover, and when does the 2027 window open?

The quota is genuinely full funding, not a partial discount. It covers tuition for the whole degree, the one-year Russian language preparatory course if you need it, a monthly stipend, and a place in a university dormitory.

The number allocated to Bangladesh has grown sharply. Alexandra Khlevnoy, director of the Russian House in Dhaka, told a press conference on 30 June 2026 that scholarships for Bangladeshi students rose from 65 in 2018 to 200 in 2026, across more than 400 universities.

The 2026–27 round closed on 15 January 2026. The dates for the 2027/2028 round are expected to be announced in September 2026 — which is now.

Verify before you plan around this: the exact opening and closing dates for the 2027/2028 quota round had not been published at the time of writing. Watch the official portal and the Russian House in Dhaka directly, and do not rely on any agency's "deadline" until it matches the official announcement.

How much does studying in Russia really cost for a Bangladeshi student?

Here is where honest advice diverges sharply from most marketing. Russia is cheap if you win the quota. If you are self-funding at a top Moscow university, it is not cheap at all.

UniversityQS rankAnnual tuitionCheap?
Moscow State (Global Studies)115RUB 586,130 (~USD 7,456)Mid
HSE (Applied Maths)423RUB 700,000 (~USD 8,905)No
Univ. of Warsaw289~EUR 4,200–4,300Yes
Univ. of Vienna140EUR 726.72 per semesterYes
Russian govt quota—Fully funded + stipendYes

Read that table properly. A self-funded seat at HSE costs more than a public university in Warsaw or Vienna. Russia's real advantage for a self-funded Bangladeshi family is not headline tuition at elite Moscow institutions — it is the quota, the regional universities, and the cost of actually living there.

The invitation letter is valid for only three months — the paperwork clock starts the day it is issued.

On living costs, Md Gawsul Azam — a RUDN University graduate who spent close to fifteen years in Russia and led the Bangladesh Students' Association there — gives figures worth quoting: a university dormitory runs about USD 20–50 a month, and USD 200–300 a month generally covers food, transport and daily expenses in Moscow. A private flat pushes that to USD 500–600. Against London or Sydney, that is a different universe.

Where do you apply from — is there a New Delhi trap?

No. This is one of the few destinations where a Bangladeshi student does not have to build a trip to India into the plan. Both institutions that matter sit within a few streets of each other in Gulshan-2.

Compare that with Estonia, Bulgaria, Slovakia or the Czech Republic, where every long-stay study file has to be lodged in person in New Delhi. Russia removes an entire layer of cost, risk and Indian-visa dependency from the process.

Russian language teaching has also spread well beyond the Russian House. Courses now run at the Institute of Modern Languages at the University of Dhaka, Stamford University Bangladesh and the State University of Bangladesh, and specialists from St Petersburg University and RUDN have taught intensive courses at Daffodil International University and North South University.

Why is your first Russian student visa only three months long?

Because Russia does not issue a visa that covers a whole degree — no such document exists. The system is deliberately incremental, and students who do not understand it get caught.

Your first student visa is valid for three months. Before it expires, your university's international students office applies to extend it. The second visa is issued for one year and, unlike the first, lets you travel in and out of Russia. After that, it is renewed annually for as long as you study.

Can you work while studying in Russia?

Yes — and this is genuinely one of the more generous regimes among affordable study destinations. Russia simplified student employment in 2020: a foreign student enrolled full-time now needs only a certificate from their university confirming they study there in order to sign an employment or civil-law contract. No separate work permit. The framework sits in Federal Law No. 115-FZ of 25 July 2002 as amended.

Put that next to the countries Bangladeshi students are usually shown. In China, paid work requires the first academic year to be completed and is then capped at eight hours a week. In Georgia, since March 2026 any paid work needs a Special Labour Permit that a study visa does not confer. Russia asks for a university letter.

Work rights are not the same thing as work availability. Nearly all realistic student jobs in Russia require functional Russian, which is exactly why the preparatory year matters more than students expect.

How do you get your Bangladeshi certificates accepted — apostille or legalisation?

This is the step that quietly derails files, and it needs care. The Russian government's own portal publishes a list of countries whose education documents are exempt from legalisation by treaty. India is on that list. Bangladesh is not. Your SSC, HSC and degree certificates therefore must be legalised in some form — they cannot simply be photocopied and submitted.

The good news is that the simplified route should be open to you. The 1961 Hague Apostille Convention entered into force for Bangladesh on 30 March 2025, Russia has been a party since 1992, and Russia is not among the states that objected to Bangladesh's accession. The Russian portal explicitly accepts an apostille where the issuing country is a Convention member.

Unconfirmed — confirm at the Embassy before you spend money. Bangladesh's accession was recorded subject to the objection procedure, so the objection list can change. The Russian Embassy's own website in Dhaka returned no readable content when we checked it for this guide, so we could not verify the apostille position or the current visa fee from the mission's own pages. Ask the Embassy directly whether an apostille alone is sufficient for your specific documents, and get the answer before paying any attestation fee.

What do you actually put in the visa file?

  • Passport valid well beyond the intended stay
  • Completed visa application form
  • The original invitation — MFA telex (quota) or university letter (self-funded)
  • Photograph, 3.5 × 4.5 cm
  • Medical insurance policy
  • Certificate confirming you are HIV-negative — required for any visa over 90 days, and a student visa always is
  • Legalised or apostilled academic certificates and transcripts
  • Parental consent to travel, if the applicant is under 18

Visas are refused for an incomplete or incorrectly prepared file, doubts about document authenticity, or any existing Russian entry ban. Note also that Bangladesh is not on Russia's visa-free list — those arrangements cover countries such as Belarus, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, not Bangladesh.

What are the real risks nobody puts in the brochure?

Paying the money is genuinely difficult. Bangladesh's payment channels to Russia were disrupted in 2022 when major Russian banks were cut off from SWIFT, and normal transfer routes stopped working. Students and families frequently end up relying on informal alternatives — which is precisely where money gets lost. This is the single biggest practical obstacle to self-funded study in Russia from Bangladesh, and it is the thing to plan for first, not last.

Unofficial middlemen. Mehedi Hasan, Regional Director of the Dhaka consultancy Study Stair, has warned publicly that students who apply through other students or unverified channels are sometimes cheated, and that visa scrutiny has tightened, particularly for universities with weaker international reputations. His own firm's Russia applicant numbers went from around 40 to around 100 in two years — the demand is real, and so is the opportunism around it.

Degree recognition back home. A Russian degree is not automatically usable in Bangladesh for regulated professions. If you are going for medicine in particular, the recognition and registration requirements you will face on return need to be checked before you enrol, not after you graduate.

Language. Most quota students spend a full year on Russian before their degree even begins. Budget that year into your life plan.

Every figure in this guide comes from official Russian government portals or named Bangladeshi press reporting, and each is dated in the text. Visa rules, fees and quota dates change without notice — treat this as a map, not a contract, and confirm anything that affects your money or your timeline with the Embassy before acting.

Is Russia the right choice for you?

What we see at Eduvisa is that students arrive with the wrong question. They ask "is Russia cheap?" The useful question is "which door am I actually going through?" A quota winner and a self-funded applicant at the same Moscow university are living in two completely different financial realities — one is fully funded with a stipend, the other is paying more than they would in Warsaw while fighting a banking system that does not want to move their money.

Sorting out which of those you are is a fifteen-minute conversation, and it saves families months. It depends on your grades, your subject, whether you can commit to a preparatory year, and how your certificates were issued. That assessment is not something a blog post can do for you — and it is the part we would rather do properly, in person, before you spend anything.
