Slovakia Student Visa from Bangladesh 2027: Full Guide

Every few weeks a student walks into our office holding a printout that says "Slovakia visa applications are accepted in Dhaka." They are half right, and the half they have wrong is the half that matters. If you are looking for a Slovakia student visa from Bangladesh in 2027, the Embassy of Italy in Dhaka cannot help you — it handles Slovakia's short-stay Schengen work only. Your study application goes to New Delhi, in person. That single detail decides your whole timeline.

Slovakia is one of the genuinely cheap doors into the European Union, and a handful of Bangladeshi agencies have quietly worked it for years. What almost none of them publish is the awkward part: the paperwork is unusually strict, everything must be translated into Slovak by a court-registered translator, and you will be interviewed before your file even leaves India. Here is the honest version, with sources.

Can you apply for a Slovakia student visa in Bangladesh?

No — not for study. The Embassy of the Slovak Republic in New Delhi states plainly that Italy represents Slovakia in visa matters in Bangladesh, and that residents of this consular district can apply "for short stays (up to 90 days) in Schengen area at the Embassy of Italy in Dhaka." Short stays means tourism, business, a family visit. A degree is not a short stay.

For anything longer than 90 days, the same page says citizens of Bangladesh, Bhutan, the Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka submit their applications at the Embassy in New Delhi, and that personal presence is mandatory — applications through an agent are not accepted. Appointments are requested by email to the consular section; you send your name, passport number, intended date and purpose of travel, and the confirmation comes back by email.

What does it actually cost to study in Slovakia in 2027?

Less than almost anywhere else in the EU, if you pick the right programme. Slovak public universities do not charge tuition for full-time study in the Slovak language within the standard length of the degree — and that rule is not limited to Europeans. Study in English and you pay, but the numbers stay modest: the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava states on its own admissions page that "the cost of the study programmes in an English language reaches 4.000 € maximum."

How much money do you have to show, and in whose name?

Slovakia ties the figure to its subsistence minimum, which rose on 1 July 2026 from €284.13 to €295.22 a month. Your stay must be financially covered for every month of it, so a one-year residence needs twelve times that — €3,542.64, roughly ৳5.09 lakh. Crucially the proof is normally a bank balance confirmation in the applicant's own name, or a scholarship award letter, or a sworn affidavit from a sponsor accompanied by that sponsor's own bank statement.

Temporary residence or national visa D — which route do you take?

There are two legal paths and picking the wrong one wastes months and money.

1
Get admitted. You need a confirmation of studies from a Slovak higher education institution — this is the document that proves your purpose of stay.
2
Prepare and translate. Every document not in Slovak or Czech must be translated by an official translator. If the translation is done outside Slovakia, the translator's competence must be attested by the Slovak embassy or consulate.
3
Book New Delhi and attend. The mission interviews you as a preliminary assessment, records it in writing, and you sign the record.
4
Wait for the Foreign Police. Since 15 July 2026 they must decide on granting or renewing a study residence within 90 days.
5
Collect and travel. A national visa issued purely to collect an already-granted residence permit costs €14; one issued so you can lodge the residence application inside Slovakia costs €90.
6
Report and finish in Slovakia. After you collect the residence card you have 30 days to submit a medical certificate confirming you carry no disease threatening public health.

What documents does Slovakia demand that other countries don't?

This is where files fall apart. Three requirements catch Bangladeshi applicants repeatedly.

  • A criminal record extract, apostilled or superlegalised — from Bangladesh and from every other country where you spent more than 90 days in any six consecutive months over the last three years.
  • Slovak translation by an official translator for anything not in Slovak or Czech, with foreign translations attested by the Slovak mission.
  • A 90-day freshness rule — purpose, finance and police-clearance documents must not be older than 90 days on the day you submit.
  • Application form completed in Slovak, two 3 × 3.5 cm photographs, valid passport.
  • No accommodation confirmation needed if you will study at a higher education institution — a rare piece of good news.

On the apostille: the 1961 Apostille Convention entered into force for Bangladesh on 30 March 2025, and Slovakia is not among the states that objected to Bangladesh's accession — unlike the Czech Republic, Germany, Austria and several others. So the apostille route works for Slovakia. It does not replace the Slovak translation step, and students routinely confuse the two.

Can you work while studying, and what happens after you graduate?

Full-time third-country students at Slovak universities may work 20 hours a week, or the equivalent per year, without any further permit or change of residence purpose — including on Slovakia's flexible "agreements on work performed outside the employment relationship," which is how most student jobs there are structured.

Afterwards, be realistic. Your study residence stays valid only 30 days past the completion of your degree. To stay longer you apply to renew it for the purpose of job seeking or starting a business, and that renewal runs for nine months — not the "one year post-study visa" you will see advertised. The upside is that the renewal is light: your diploma plus proof you can fund yourself, with no health insurance document, medical certificate or police clearance required again. Study residence itself can run up to six years.

What changed on 15 July 2026 that you need to know?

Slovakia's parliament amended the Act on Residence of Foreigners with effect from 15 July 2026, and three points matter to students. National visas issued in connection with residence are now issued for 120 days. The Foreign Police must decide on granting or renewing a study residence within 90 days. And the Ministry of Foreign Affairs decides a national visa application within 10 working days of receiving the Interior Ministry's opinion, which itself comes within 30 days.

Verify before you act. Slovak sources currently contradict each other in places: the national visa page still lists both a 90-day and a 120-day validity for visas issued in connection with residence, and while EURAXESS Slovakia and the EU Immigration Portal both give 20 hours a week for student work, a figure of 80 hours a month circulates online. Competitor pages are worse — one Bangladeshi agency's Slovakia page carries the line "the above information is up to date and valid until 31 December, 2021." Confirm fees, deadlines and document lists with the Embassy in New Delhi or your university before you spend money.

Is Slovakia actually a sensible choice for a Bangladeshi student?

What we see at Eduvisa is that Slovakia rewards prepared applicants and punishes rushed ones harder than most destinations. The cost side is genuinely attractive — a free Slovak-taught degree, English-taught fees below most of Western Europe, and proof of funds around a third of what the UK asks. The friction is administrative: a Delhi trip, an Indian visa, court translations, an interview, a 90-day document clock. Students who start six to eight months ahead tend to be fine. Students who start in July for a September intake usually are not.

It suits you if you can study in English on a modest budget, you are patient with paperwork, and a nine-month job-search window plus EU work rights is enough of a runway. It does not suit you if you need a mission inside Bangladesh, or if your funds only appear in your account weeks before submission.
