South Africa asks international students for something no other destination on our list asks for: proof that you have joined a South African medical scheme. Not travel insurance. Not a policy bought in Dhaka. A membership of a scheme registered with South Africa's own Council for Medical Schemes, renewed every single year you study.
The University of Pretoria puts it bluntly on its own site — no international medical cover or insurance will be accepted. Budget for it wrongly and your South Africa student visa from Bangladesh application does not get refused for a dramatic reason. It gets refused over a line item nobody quoted you.
Bangladeshi students apply for a South Africa study visa at the VFS centre in New Delhi, because the South African High Commission there is accredited to Bangladesh on a non-resident basis. You need an admission letter, a SAQA evaluation of your Bangladeshi qualifications, a police clearance, a medical and radiological report, proof of funds, and membership of a registered South African medical scheme. Expect roughly ten weeks.
Where do Bangladeshi students apply for a South Africa study visa?
New Delhi, and there is no alternative. The South African High Commission in India states it directly on its own site: "All applicants from Bangladesh and Nepal must apply to the VFS Centre in New Delhi", and the High Commission itself does not accept visa applications — only diplomatic and official passport holders deal with it directly.
This is the New Delhi routing we have now documented for most of the affordable destinations Bangladeshi students are being sold: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Mauritius and now South Africa. It is not a disqualifier. It is a cost and a logistics problem that belongs in your budget from day one, because it means you also need an Indian visa before you can lodge a South African one.
Several Bangladeshi consultancies advertise that you will not need to travel to India because they submit on your behalf. That may well be arranged for some categories — but VFS centres normally capture biometrics in person. Before you pay a non-refundable fee, ask in writing whether biometrics are required for your visa type and, if so, who appears for them. Get the answer from VFS, not only from the agency.
Do you need a SAQA evaluation, and can an agent do it for you?
Yes to the first, and no to the second — and the second half is the part that surprises people.
Foreign qualifications generally need to be evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority against the National Qualifications Framework before a university will treat your HSC or bachelor's degree as comparable. The evaluation runs through SAQA's Foreign Qualifications Evaluation and Advisory Services portal, and SAQA's guidance is that you must apply for your own evaluation — you cannot use a third party.
Turnaround is roughly 30 working days for a normal application, with faster paid tiers. Stack that on top of admission and then a ten-week visa process and the arithmetic becomes obvious: this is a six-to-nine month journey, not a two-month one.

What documents does the study visa actually require?
The list below is drawn from what South African institutions publish for their own incoming students. Requirements are assessed case by case and change without much notice, so treat this as the shape of the file rather than a final checklist.
- Passport valid at least 30 days beyond the end of studies, with blank visa pages
- Completed DHA-1738 application form
- Admission letter stating the duration of the degree, confirming you are not taking a local student's place, and undertaking to notify Home Affairs if you deregister
- SAQA evaluation of your Bangladeshi qualifications
- Medical report by a registered practitioner, less than six months old
- Radiological report, less than six months old (tuberculosis screening)
- Police clearance certificate, not older than six months
- Proof of funds covering tuition and maintenance for the full period
- Proof of membership of a South African registered medical scheme
- Proof of accommodation arranged in South Africa
- Possibly a cash deposit or return ticket as a repatriation guarantee
South African universities are required to confirm in writing that the admitted international student "is not taking the place of a local student", and to undertake to tell the Department of Home Affairs when that student deregisters. Your immigration status is therefore wired directly into your university's reporting duty. Stop attending, and Home Affairs finds out — not eventually, but as a matter of the institution's obligation.
What does the medical scheme requirement really cost?
We are not going to invent a figure, because premiums vary by scheme, plan and age, and no government page publishes a single number. What we can tell you precisely is the rule, which is more useful than a guessed price.
The cover must be with a scheme registered under South Africa's Medical Schemes Act and regulated by the Council for Medical Schemes. It must be valid for a full academic year, January to December, and renewed annually for the length of your study visa. Proof of that cover is required both at initial application and at every renewal. International travel insurance does not substitute, however comprehensive it looks.
Can Bangladeshi students work in South Africa while studying?
Yes — up to 20 hours a week, for as long as the study visa is valid, and only if you are at a higher education institution. The important caveat is that this is term-time work; it is not a right to work full time through the vacations, and treating it as one puts your status at risk.
Post-study is where honest advice matters. South Africa has no general graduate route of the kind the UK offers. Staying on to work means qualifying for a separate work visa on its own merits, most commonly through the critical skills list, which changes and which not every degree maps onto. Anyone selling South Africa to you primarily as a settlement route is selling you something the visa system does not promise.
What happens if you want to change university?
Your study visa is issued for one named institution. Moving to another is not an administrative update — it is a fresh application. You first need a release letter from your current institution confirming it has no objection to the transfer, and then apply for a change of conditions, which the University of Pretoria describes as constituting a new study visa application with the same requirements as the original.
Renewals run through VFS too, with the BI-1739 form, and they are deliberately front-loaded: apply 30 to 60 days before your current visa expires, with a fresh police clearance, a fresh radiological report, a fresh medical certificate, proof of registration, proof of fees paid and proof of current medical scheme cover.
Is South Africa cheap for Bangladeshi students?
Cheaper than the UK, Australia or Canada — yes, comfortably. But "cheap" is doing a lot of work in the marketing you will see, so here is the honest breakdown of where South Africa's costs actually sit.
| Cost | Status | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition | Moderate | Well below UK/Australia; varies widely by institution and faculty |
| Medical scheme | Compulsory | SA-registered scheme, annual, no foreign insurance accepted |
| SAQA evaluation | Extra | Separate fee, student must apply personally |
| Delhi trip | Extra | Indian visa plus travel, on top of VFS fees |
| Renewal | Annual | DHA fee plus a separate VFS service fee each time |
| Part-time work | 20 hrs | Term time only; helps, but will not fund a degree |
We are deliberately not quoting exact tuition rands or visa fees here. South African institutions set their own international fee schedules and DHA and VFS fees are revised periodically; any number we printed today would be wrong by the time a 2027-28 intake student actually paid it. Ask the institution for its current international fee schedule in writing.
Will South Africa accept apostilled Bangladeshi certificates?
Yes. South Africa is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention and is not among the states that objected to Bangladesh's accession, which entered into force for Bangladesh on 30 March 2025. Your certificates can be apostilled at home rather than going through full consular legalisation. Note that this is separate from the SAQA evaluation — apostille proves the document is genuine; SAQA decides what it is worth on the South African framework. You will likely need both.
So who should actually consider South Africa?
The profile fits better than most Bangladeshi students expect. South Africa teaches in English. IELTS is frequently recommended rather than mandatory. Study gaps are treated more tolerantly than in the UK system. There are internationally ranked universities and a large, established international student population. For a student with a gap year or two and a modest budget who wants an English-medium degree, it is a serious option.
What should give you pause is the direction of the sales pitch. The largest Bangladeshi operator in this market frames its South Africa student visa page substantially around bringing family members of people already living in South Africa — spouses, siblings, relatives of permit and asylum holders — and describes the study visa as a "gateway". A study visa used primarily as a family-reunification device is exactly the pattern immigration officers are trained to spot, and the refusal lands on the student.
What we see at Eduvisa is that South Africa works well for people who genuinely want the degree and badly for people who want the passport stamp. The paperwork chain is long but every link is knowable in advance; the applications that fail are usually the ones where the story does not match the documents.
