Most students hear about a Malta refusal in the same order: a course was chosen in June, an offer arrived in July, the file went to VFS in mid-August, and the course started in late September. Nothing in that story looks careless. It is still, on paper, a refusal — because Malta's own student checklist says the application must be submitted at least nine weeks before the course begins, and nobody had read the checklist.
That is the pattern behind most Malta student visa refusal reasons for Bangladeshi students in 2027. Malta does not refuse people for being unimpressive. It refuses files that do not match a very specific, very literal list published by Identità, the Maltese identity and visa authority. Below is what that list actually demands, where Bangladeshi applicants most often fall short, and what it costs when the answer comes back no.
Malta student visas are refused mostly on checklist grounds, not judgement calls. Identità requires submission at least nine weeks before the course starts, funds of at least 75% of Malta's minimum wage for every month of study, an enrolment letter carrying MFHEA-registered course details with proof of payment, accommodation for the first 14 nights and insurance of €30,000.
Why do Malta student visas get refused for Bangladeshi students?
Because the Malta student file is judged against a published document list, and that list is unusually precise. The current version — "Documentation Required for Student National Visa (for visas of more than 90 days)", version 2.1 dated 13 August 2025 — runs to twelve numbered items, several of which contain their own sub-rules about timing, wording and who the document must be addressed to. Miss the wording and the paper is treated as missing.
Layered on top of that is Identità's own long-stay visa policy, which is blunter than most students expect. It states that there is no legislation governing long-stay visas at all: the D visa "falls within the competence of each Member State", so Malta is applying a policy, not a statutory right. The same policy says a long-stay visa "does not give an absolute right of entry" and that entry may be refused where conditions are no longer met "or if there is a risk of abuse of procedure". Every application also passes a Schengen Information System check.
So there are two ways to lose: fail the checklist, or trigger the discretion. Most Bangladeshi refusals are the first kind, and the first kind is preventable.
How early do you need to apply for a Malta student visa?
At least nine weeks before your course commencement date. This is not advice — it is item 04 on Identità's student checklist, printed beside the VFS appointment letter requirement: "The application must be submitted at least 9 weeks before the commencement date of course."
VFS Global's own Bangladesh page for Malta adds the other half of the timing picture: long-stay Malta applications "require a minimum of 6 to 8 weeks of processing time". Nine weeks of lead time and six to eight weeks of processing are not a comfortable margin — they are the same number. If you book your appointment eight weeks out, you are already outside the rule before an officer has opened the file.
Count backwards from the course commencement date on your acceptance letter, not from the intake month, and not from your flight. Nine weeks before that date is the last acceptable submission day. Working backwards from there, tuition payment, the bank certificate and the accommodation booking all have to be finished earlier still.
How much money must you show for a Malta student visa in 2027?
Identità's checklist sets the test in a way almost no competitor blog quotes correctly. You need a bank statement covering the last three months, attached to a recent bank certificate, and "the funds must amount to at least 75% of the national minimum wage for every month of study."
Malta's national minimum wage for employees aged 18 and over rose to €229.44 per week from 1 January 2026, under Legal Notice 289 of 2025. On a 52-week year that is roughly €994 a month, so 75% works out at about €746 per month of study — near €8,950 for a twelve-month course, which at today's rate is close to ৳12.8 lakh. Treat the monthly conversion as our arithmetic rather than a published figure, and note that the wage is revised every January, so a 2027 application will be tested against a 2027 wage.
A large balance that appeared last week does not satisfy a three-month statement. If a sponsor is funding you, Malta wants three specific things — the sponsor's own three-month bank statement, a signed declaration letter, and a copy of the sponsor's ID card (front and back) or passport bio page. And item 07 catches almost everyone: a copy, front and back, of the international bank card you will actually use to access money in Malta. A card that cannot be used abroad is not proof of access.
What must your Malta acceptance letter contain?
More than an acceptance. Identità lists eight things the school enrolment letter must state clearly, and the first two tie your file to Malta's regulator, the MFHEA: the institution name as registered with MFHEA and the full course name as listed on the MFHEA website. If the letter uses a marketing name for the programme rather than the registered one, the letter does not match the register.
The rest of the list is equally literal: MQF level, number of ECTS, duration in months and whether the course is full-time or part-time, course hiatus periods such as Easter and summer holidays, course hours per week specifying contact hours, and the address where lectures will be attended. Then the line students overlook completely — "proof of payment must be submitted (receipt or invoice)". Malta expects money to have already moved towards the institution before the visa is decided.

Why do accommodation and flight bookings cause Malta refusals?
Because both have exact shapes, and a reasonable-looking booking in the wrong shape fails. Accommodation must cover the first 14 nights from the date of arrival in Malta and must be in the applicant's name. Malta accepts four forms of it: a letter on the school's letterhead, signed and stamped, giving your name, surname, passport number, address and duration; a registered lease agreement signed by both parties stating duration, address, your name and the rent; a host's declaration of proof signed and stamped by a Maltese lawyer or notary, with the host's ID card and proof of the host's link to the property; or a hotel or short-term rental booking of at least 14 consecutive nights.
Flights are stricter than students expect. A full itinerary must show your name, the flight date and all stops — and the entry ticket must be dated no more than two weeks before the course commencement date. Arriving a month early to "settle in" contradicts your own checklist. For courses under six months, a return ticket after the course ends is required as well.
What health insurance does Malta accept?
For students on courses at MQF level 5 and above — the level most degree students apply at, and the level that opens a study residence permit once in Malta — the policy must be valid across the Schengen area, carry minimum medical cover of €30,000, run for at least 91 consecutive days from your first point of entry into Schengen, and be valid for study purposes. If the certificate does not show all of that on its face, Identità will ask for the table of benefits. For MQF level 4 and below, the cover must instead span the whole stay, from first entry to exit.
Identità's long-stay policy lists "discovery of false or misleading information and/or documents" first among the grounds for revoking or annulling a visa. Where a visa is revoked, the holder must leave immediately, and failure to comply may bring "legal action, including a possible entry ban". A doctored bank statement or an invented sponsor letter does not simply fail — it can close the Schengen door for years. No agent's promise is worth that.
| Document | Malta asks for | Risk |
|---|---|---|
| Submission timing | At least 9 weeks before course start | High |
| Passport | Validity of 10 months | Medium |
| Bank proof | 3-month statement + recent bank certificate | High |
| Funds level | 75% of minimum wage per month of study | High |
| Enrolment letter | MFHEA-registered names, MQF, ECTS, contact hours, payment proof | High |
| Bank card | Copy front and back, usable internationally | Medium |
| Accommodation | First 14 nights, in your own name | Medium |
| Flight | Entry max 2 weeks before course start | Medium |
| Insurance | €30,000, Schengen-wide, 91+ days, study purpose | Medium |
| Translations | Only from Identità's authorised translators list | Avoidable |
What happens to your money if the Malta visa is refused?
You lose it. Identità's policy states that fees paid on a long-stay visa application "shall not be refundable, regardless of the circumstances, including the voluntary withdrawal or refusal of the said application". VFS Global's Bangladesh page repeats it for both charges: "The VISA Fee and VFS Service Fees are Non-Refundable in case the VISA is refused."
For a Bangladeshi student that is a real number, not a footnote.
| Item | Cost | Refundable? |
|---|---|---|
| Student visa fee, standard | €100 (≈ ৳14,300) | No |
| Student visa fee, extended | €150 (≈ ৳21,400) | No |
| VFS service charge, standard | ৳13,935 | No |
| VFS service charge, extended | ৳20,900 | No |
| Appeal filing fee | €120 (≈ ৳17,100) | No |
| Tuition already paid | Per institution | Ask first |
A standard student application refused in Bangladesh therefore burns roughly ৳28,000 before you count tuition, translation, insurance or the flight booking — and the tuition question is the one to settle in writing with your institution before you pay, not after a refusal letter arrives. One more Bangladesh-specific trap sits in the payment itself: VFS instructs applicants to "use a card with international payments enabled to pay the visa fee during the appointment booking process". A local card without international transactions switched on stops the booking before it starts.
How do you appeal a Malta student visa refusal from Bangladesh?
Quickly. Identità gives a right of appeal "within fifteen (15) days of the notification" where a visa is refused, annulled or revoked. Appeals go to the Immigration Appeals Board — described in the policy as an autonomous judicial board — against a fee of €120 per visa application, and can be lodged online through the government's e-service portal or in person at the Board's registry in Valletta. You must attach a copy of the refusal letter plus anything else you consider relevant.
- Read the refusal letter before reacting. It states the grounds; the grounds decide whether you appeal or simply reapply properly for the next intake.
- Check the date of notification, not the date you opened the email. Fifteen days is short, and Malta communicates by email.
- Decide honestly between appeal and reapplication. A missing document is usually fixed faster by a clean new file than by an appeal.
- Fix the underlying cause. Reapplying with the same nine-week problem produces the same answer.
Identità's checklist closes with an instruction most students skim: "It must be ensured that email addresses are correctly written when submitting the visa application as official communication will be communicated via email." Your appointment updates, your requests for missing documents and your refusal letter — with its fifteen-day clock — all arrive there. One typo and the clock runs while you wait.
What does Eduvisa check before a Malta file goes to VFS?
What we see most often at Eduvisa is not dishonesty, it is a mismatch. A student brings a genuine offer letter that simply does not carry the MFHEA-registered course name; or three months of statements where the second month is missing because the account was opened in between; or a tuition receipt that has not been issued yet because the institution invoices after visa approval. Each one is fixable in a week if it is spotted in Bangladesh, and fatal if it is spotted at the counter.
So our Malta files get read backwards — from the nine-week deadline outwards. We check the enrolment letter against the MFHEA register line by line, we calculate the 75% figure against the current minimum wage for the exact number of months on the letter, we make sure the accommodation proof carries the applicant's own name, and we confirm that translations came from Identità's authorised translators list, because all documents must be submitted in English and Malta names the translators it accepts.
- Course commencement date fixed, and the submission date set at least nine weeks earlier
- Passport valid for at least 10 months, per the student checklist
- Three months of statements plus a recent bank certificate, with the 75% figure recalculated for your course length
- Sponsor's statement, signed declaration and ID copy, if you are sponsored
- Copy of an internationally usable bank card, front and back
- Enrolment letter carrying the MFHEA names, MQF level, ECTS, hiatus periods, contact hours, lecture address and proof of payment
- Accommodation for the first 14 nights, in your name, in one of the four accepted forms
- Flight itinerary with entry no more than two weeks before the course starts
- Insurance of €30,000, Schengen-valid, study purpose, 91+ consecutive days
- Every translation from Identità's authorised translators list, everything in English
